Illinois Vietnam Veteran Receives New Roof From Legacy

Over the last few years, Legacy Restoration has had the privilege to give back to Veterans within the communities we serve through the Roof Deployment Project.

Owens Corning’s national Roof Deployment Project allows OC Platinum Preferred Contractors to identify one of our country’s heroes in their market and honor them with a new roofing system. Each contractor donates labor while OC provides the product — ensuring there is no cost to the Veteran. Since its launch in 2016, the RDP has gifted over 250 military members! Legacy has proudly taken part in 4 of RDP’s!

This October, our Illinois Legacy Restoration team was able to gift Lawrence Downes, a Specialist 4 in Vietnam from 1968 – 1970, with a new roofing system. Lawrence received an honorable discharge due to injuries sustained during the war which have caused him ongoing hardships in the years after. After some recent storms in his neighborhood, Lawrence’s home had significant damage and he was unable to get the assistance and funding he needed from his insurance and was also unable to cover the costs for a new roof on his own. Mr. Downes roof, which was one of the oldest our team has seen, had weathered 36 years and was in desperate need of attention.

Knowing the countless sacrifices Lawrence and his fellow military members made in their years serving and seeing how kind-hearted and generous he remains with others in need, Legacy knew he was the perfect candidate for this year’s project. It was our great pleasure to partner with Owens Corning and Purple Heart Homes of Illinois to ensure Lawrence had a safe, sound and dry place to call home for years to come!

“It was really, really bad – maybe even one of the worst I’ve been on,” says Legacy Restoration sales manager, Brad. “I told Lawrence he was really getting his money’s worth, because this roof is probably over 30 years old.”

Lawrence loves his home in Palos Heights, IL, and is proud to have raised his two kids there. And Team Legacy is proud to have been able to assist him with this much needed refresh to his home!

“I was shocked when Legacy called me on the phone and told me the good news,” said Lawrence. “They told me they were going to do it all for free and thanked me for my service – I couldn’t believe it.”
